How to Check Your Car’s Oil

Let’s talk about motor oil for a few minutes. Why? It’s an integral part of your Nissan engine, so you should always make sure your Nissan vehicle is topped off with the right amount! Whether you’re sticking to local Connellsville streets or venturing off to Washington, we can help you ensure your vehicle has plenty of oil. How? By providing you the following guide on how to check oil level in a car! Have questions along the way? Contact our service experts today.

Here’s How to Check the Oil Level in Your Nissan

Many Nissan cars now use electronic oil monitors in place of physical dipsticks. Check your owner’s manual to see what it says about how to check the oil level in your car. If you’re checking it digitally, there will often be a driver information display located near your speedometer and tachometer that you can press a button to toggle between information like gas mileage, temperature, and oil level. If however, you’re checking the oil in your car manually, here’s what to do:

  1. Park your Nissan vehicle on level ground and make sure the engine is not only turned off, but also has been off for sufficient time to be cold.
  2. Open the hood and locate the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of its receptacle and wipe it clean of oil.
  4. Return the dipstick back into its receptacle, then pull it out again and check the level. Most dipsticks will indicate level with two dots or cross-hatched marks; if the oil level is between these markings, you’re most-likely good-to-go!

Pro tip: Do you need to add more oil into your vehicle? Make sure you get the grade recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Then remove the oil filler cap and oil a little at a time in a steady stream until the dipstick indicates you’ve reached the right amount.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

If you’re an infrequent driver, you may think it’s not important to get a regular oil change. That’s not necessarily true. Over time, oil gets more viscous and filled with impurities when used. Even if it sits, it can get “gummy” over time. Accordingly, you should get your oil changed at least twice a year even if you don’t drive your vehicle often, and you should check your oil level or have that done at our service center once a month.
